Scottish films, often stirring sometimes romantic and occasionally schmaltzy! Some of the most evocative and memorable are below. Often the film's include local talent and many fine Scottish actors and actresses have appeared in celluloid over the years. However many times it is Scotland's scenery itself that is the star especially in film's like 'Local Hero' and 'Rob Roy'. Braveheart 

 Braveheart is a 1995 historical action-drama film produced and directed by Mel Gibson, who also starred in the title role. The film was written for screen and then novelized by Randall Wallace. Gibson portrays a legendary Scot, William Wallace, who gained recognition when he came to the forefront of the First War of Scottish Independence by opposing Edward I of England (portrayed by Patrick McGoohan) and subsequently abetted by Edward's daughter-in-law  Princess Isabelle  (played by Sophie Marceau) and a claimant to the Scottish throne, Robert the Bruce (played by Angus Macfadyen).

Local Hero 

 

Local Hero is a 1983 Scottish film starring Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson, Peter Capaldi and Burt Lancaster.  It was directed by Bill Forsyth and produced by David Puttman.

The film is set in the fictional fishing village of Ferness on the west coast of Scotland. A young representative of an American oil company is sent to the village on a mission. The film features a notable ensemble of character parts.

The film's soundtrack, which outsold the film itself, was written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits , and is considered amongst his best work. This has led to the popularity of the film with fans of the band; Knopfler has since performed an arrangement of the main theme music ("Going Home") as an encore at many of his concerts. 'Local Hero' from the soundtrack is played as Newcastle United take to the field in their home games played at St James' Park

 Local Hero was filmed at several places around Scotland. Most of the village scenes were filmed in Pennan on the Aberdeenshire coast, most of the beach scenes at Morar and Arisaig on the West Coast.

Whisky Galore 

 

Whisky Galore! (released in the US as Tight Little Island) was a 1949 Ealing Comedy Film based on the novel of the same name by Compton MacKenzie. Both the movie and the novel are based on the real-life 1941 shipwreck of the S.S.Politician and the unauthorized taking of its cargo of whisky. The plot deals with the attempts of Scottish islanders to take advantage of an unexpected windfall, despite opposition from British authorities. It starred Basil Radford, Bruce Seton, Joan Greenwood and Gordon Jackson. This was Alexander MacKendrick's directorial debut.

Mackenzie also wrote a sequel, Rockets Galore!, which was filmed by the Rank Organisation in 1957.  An attempt was made to produce a remake of the film between 2004 and 2006.

Rob Roy 

 

Rob Roy is a historical drama  film directed by Michael Caton-Jones  and released in 1995. The film was generally inspired by elements of the life of a 17th-18th century Scot named Robert Roy MacGregor and his battles with feudal landowners in the Scottish Highlands. United Artists, distributor of the film, describe Rob Roy as a "riveting adventure of courage, love and uncompromising honour."

The film stars Liam Neeson in the title role, along with Jessica Lange, John Hurt, Tim roth, Eric Stolz and Brian Cox.  Tim Roth was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the villian Archibald Cunningham.

Trainspotting 

 Trainspotting is a 1996  film directed by Danny Boyle based on the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh. The movie follows a group of heroin addicts in early 1990s economically-depressed area of Edinburgh and their passage through life. The film stars Ewan McGregor as Mark Renton, Ewen Bremner as Spud, Jonny Lee Miller  as Sick Boy, Kevin McKidd as Tommy, Robert Carlyle as Begbie and Kelly MacDonald as Diane. Author Irvine Welsh also has a cameo appearance as hapless drug dealer Mikey Forrester.

Shallow Grave 

 

Shallow Grave is a 1994 British crime thriller film that marks the directorial debut of Danny Boyle with an original screenplay by John Hodge.

The film also provided starring roles for the then unknown actors Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston and Kerry Fox.

The production was funded by Channel 4 television and the film distributed by Polygram Filmed Entertainment who as with their other releases generated a large amount of publicity for the film on a limited budget.
