Websters defn: Any of various gnatlike flies of the family Chironomidae, found worldwide and frequently occurring in swarms near ponds and lakes.


It's more aggressive branch the Scottish midge (Midgie)…..

and it’s psychopathic sub-clan the ‘Island Midgie’.....

An Ode to the Island Midge

 

Och you fearsome, ferocious, wee beast,
Upon my tender flesh you do feast.
In my hoose, you sneak through the door
Followed by 3 million more.

When the air is warm and still
You lurk outside my window cill
Ready to pounce and bite poor Squidge
My only escape is into the fridge

It may be cold but it’s quite airtight
At least I’m safe from your fearsome bite
Away from the beastie, the island curse
My bumpy bites are getting worse

I try to escape through the garden gate
But even there you lay in wait
You hide in the trees, you hide in the grass
Eagerly waiting for Squidgy to pass

You've bitten my tail, my legs, my face
You seem to invade the most intimate place
I dash through the machair and onto the beach
Surely there, I’ll be out of your reach

Into the sea, and beneath the foam
No midges here in my sea green home
Itching ears, eyes and neck
I’m swimming insanely, a midge-hating wreck

You bite, I itch, you bite, I scratch
Against this beast, I am no match
But look what I’ve found upon the Croft
It’s an Avon Bottle, called “Skin So Soft”

Will it work? I’ll give it a try
To scare away that vicious fly
I cover myself from head to tail
A weather forecast: A force 10 Gale

Windy weather, cold and clear
As if by magic you just disappear
And so to end this Midgie Ode

I Thank the lord, its getting cold.
